Information about Gold Britannia 1 oz - 2023
The Gold Britannia, a British gold coin minted by The Royal Mint since 1987, holds the distinction of being the first European bullion coin. Its value is expressed in British Pounds, and it is considered legal tender in Great Britain. Since its introduction in 1987, the coin has been available in denominations of 1/10 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce.
Starting in 2013, the Gold Britannia boasts an impressive fineness level of 999.9, a significant increase from its previous fineness of 916.7, which equated to 22 Karat. Until 1989, an alloy containing copper (1/12) was utilized, imparting a reddish tint to the coin. Subsequently, copper and silver were employed in equal proportions. Furthermore, since 1997, the Britannia has also been issued in silver.
The design of the gold coin
The obverse of the Britannia gold coin features the depiction of the Roman goddess and embodiment of Britain, "Britannia," portrayed as a standing figure adorned with a helmet, shield, and trident. This design remained unchanged until the turn of the Millennium. Beginning in 2001, the motif of the Gold Britannia undergoes alterations in years with odd numbers, while it remains consistent in even-numbered years.
On the value side of the gold coin, you'll find the inaugural coin portrait of King Charles III, who ascended to the throne in 2022. This portrait of the King was crafted by the renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally endorsed by His Majesty. In keeping with tradition, the King's portrait faces left, in contrast to Queen Elizabeth II, who faces in the opposite direction. The portrait is encircled by the inscriptions "CHARLES III - D-G-REX-F-D" and the face value of "100 POUNDS."
