The Gold American Eagle was created by the USA in response to the embargo on Krugerrand imports imposed as a result of apartheid sanctions. It was introduced by the US Mint in 1986 in US Dollar and quickly became very popular as an investment coin. In the same year, the Silver American Eagle became the first silver coin produced in the USA.
The Gold American Eagle has a fineness of 916.7 (22 carat), which is similar to the Krugerrand coin. Its increased hardness, which is achieved by adding an alloy of 5.3% copper and 3% silver, distinguishes it from pure gold. The coin is available in various denominations such as 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce. Each American Eagle represents a value of 5 to 50 US Dollar. It is important to know that the coin has legal tender status in the United States.

The design of the gold coin
The obverse of the popular Gold American Eagle coin shows the famous "Lady Liberty" with an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other. From 1986 to 1991, the year of minting was shown in Roman numerals. Now it is engraved in Arabic numerals. The other side of the coin shows an image of the American heraldic bird, the bald eagle.
