The design of the gold coin
The coin's obverse features the iconic symbol of the Canadian national flag, a maple leaf. On the reverse is the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, typical of Commonwealth coins. Since 2013, as an additional security measure, a small maple leaf with the last two digits of the year of minting has been placed on the 1 ounce coin. The coin bears inscriptions in Canada's two official languages, English and French.
Originally, the Gold Maple Leaf was only offered in a denomination of 1 ounce with a face value of 50 Canadian Dollar. Today, it is also available in various fractions, including 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/2 ounce. In addition, a unique 1/15 ounce issue was minted in 1994. The Maple Leaf gold coin has a fineness of 999.9. Since 1988, the coin has also been available in silver and platinum, and since 2005 it has also been produced in palladium.
