Information about Gold Maple Leaf 1/4 oz

The Gold Maple Leaf is a Canadian coin, first minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. Therefore, it is one of the oldest gold bullion coins in the world, and the most widespread next to the Krugerrand. The batch number partly outranked the Krugerrand.

The design of the gold coin

The obverse side of the coin features an image of a maple leaf, mirroring the iconic symbol found on Canada's national flag. On the reverse side, typical of Commonwealth coins, you'll find the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II. Since 2013, the 1-ounce variant of the Maple Leaf gold coin includes an added security measure—a small maple leaf containing the last two digits of the minting year. The coin bears inscriptions in both of Canada's official languages, English and French.

Originally, the Gold Maple Leaf was exclusively offered in a 1-ounce denomination, with a face value of 50 Canadian Dollars. Nowadays, it's also available in various fractional sizes, including 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/2 ounce. Additionally, a unique 1/15 ounce edition was minted in 1994. Notably, the Maple Leaf gold coin boasts a purity level of 999.9. Starting from 1988, the coin has been accessible in silver and platinum, and since 2005, it's been produced in palladium as well.
