The Australian nugget or gold coin called the Gold Kangaroo enjoys great popularity worldwide due to the annually changing motif on the obverse. It was first minted by the Perth Mint in 1986. The fineness of the coin is 999.9 and the coin is used as recognized legal tender.
The Australian Nugget has been minted since 1987 in units of 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce. The value is between 5 and 100 Australian Dollar. There are now also larger units of 2 ounces, 10 ounces and 1 kilogram. A 2 Dollar version of this coin weighing 0.5 grams was minted in 2010. As the Perth Mint also produces coin units of 1 ton, the Gold Kangaroo is not only the smallest, but also the largest bullion coin in the world.
The obverse of the coin shows the unique gold nuggets that were discovered in Australia before 1989. This design history gives the coin its unique name. Since 1990, the gold coin has featured kangaroos and began to change its design annually. As a result, the name was changed to "Australian Kangaroo". The larger versions of the Gold Kangaroo, such as the 2-ounce, 10-ounce and 1-kilogram versions, consistently feature the "Red Kangaroo" motif each year. On the reverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
