In 2021, the classic design of the Silver Britannia was updated with the addition of security features called "Bullion Security". The Silver Britannia was the first European bullion coin. It was first minted by the Royal Mint in 1987. The Silver Britannia has legal tender status in the UK, meaning it is an official means of payment. The coin has been available since 1987 in 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce versions.
The design of the silver coin
The obverse shows the Roman goddess "Britannia" as a standing figure with helmet, shield and trident. The goddess represents the embodiment of Britain. This design remained unchanged until the turn of the millennium. Since 2001, the design of the Silver Britannia has changed every two years. A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen on the reverse. There are also some shapes on the reverse that appear to move like waves when the viewer's perspective is changed. There is also a lock as a symbol of security when viewed from a 90 degree angle. The lock becomes a trident, one of the defining symbols of the Britannia coin, when the viewer`s perspective changes. The new edition of the motif side is rounded off by the Latin word "DECUS ET TUTAMEN" for "Glory and Defense". The value side shows the famous portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The portrait is surrounded by the words "ELIZABETH II - D-G-REG-F-D" and the face value "100 POUNDS".
