The Gold Britannia was the first European bullion coin and was introduced by the Royal Mint in 1987. The Britannia gold coin has the status of legal tender in Great Britain and is denominated in British pounds. The coin has been available in 1/10 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce versions since 1987.
At the beginning of 2013, the fineness of the Gold Britannia was increased from 916.7 (equivalent to 22 carats) to 999.9. Before 1989, a copper alloy (1/12) was added to the coin, giving it a reddish color. Later, copper and silver were added in equal amounts. Since 1997, the Britannia has also been available in silver.
The obverse shows the Roman goddess "Britannia" as a standing figure with helmet, shield and trident. The goddess represents the embodiment of Britannia. This design remained the same until the turn of the millennium. Since 2001, the design of the Gold Britannia has changed every two years. On the reverse is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been regularly updated to reflect the Queen's current appearance until her death.
