Information about Gold Britannia 1 oz
The Gold Britannia is a British gold coin introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987, making it the inaugural European bullion coin. Denominated in British Pounds, the Britannia gold coin holds the status of legal tender in Great Britain. Since its inception in 1987, the coin has been available in denominations of 1/10 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce.
Starting in 2013, the Gold Britannia boasts an impressive fineness level of 999.9, a significant increase from its previous fineness of 916.7 (equivalent to 22 Karat). Prior to 1989, a copper alloy (1/12) was incorporated into the coin, giving it a reddish hue. Subsequently, copper and silver were blended in the same proportion. Furthermore, since 1997, the Britannia has also been issued in silver.
Design of the gold coin
The obverse of the Britannia gold coin features the likeness of the Roman goddess and embodiment of Britain, "Britannia," depicted as a standing figure equipped with a helmet, shield, and trident. This motif remained consistent until the turn of the Millennium. Since 2001, the design of the Gold Britannia undergoes alterations in years with odd numbers, while it remains unaltered in even-numbered years. On the reverse side, you'll find the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is periodically updated to reflect the reigning monarch's current appearance.
